I believe this platform can serve as a rare cultural bridge\u2014one that allows us to research, create, and nurture new talents and original works for a new era.\nAs a theatre practitioner with professional experience spanning over half a century in both Eastern and Western theatre, I feel it is my responsibility to promote both inheritance and innovation. But true inheritance and innovation cannot rely solely on theoretical discussion or formalistic presentations\u2014they demand time, effort, and deep commitment to exploration and creation.\nWhat Hong Kong sorely lacks are the actual conditions needed for such long-term and in-depth artistic practice\u2014especially in terms of sustained resources. The Mao Chun Fai Performing Art Charity Foundation aspires to take on this mission: to develop unique artistic projects, cultivate professionals in the theatre arts, and promote cultural exchange within society.\nWe must take Hong Kong as our base and, through concrete actions, raise the standards of theatrical art and enhance its recognition on the international stage. This aligns with Hong Kong\u2019s positioning as a centre for cultural exchange between East and West. During his early career in the U.S., he was appointed Artistic Director of the Napa Valley Theatre Company in California at the age of 27. At 29, he made his Broadway debut in the original Harold Prince\/Stephen Sondheim musical Pacific Overtures (1976).<\/p>\r\n                    <p data-lang=\"zh\">In 1985, he returned to Hong Kong to join the newly established Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) as Head of Acting in the School of Drama. Over the years, he has trained a new generation of theatre professionals. \nFrom 2001 to 2008, he served as the first Artistic Director of the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre following its corporatisation. During his tenure, he produced numerous acclaimed works with local cultural characteristics. He led the company in groundbreaking all-Cantonese performances in Shanghai and Beijing, as well as tours in the United States and Canada, receiving widespread acclaim. Upon his departure, he was honored with the title of \u201cDirector Laureate.\u201d<\/p>\r\n                    <p data-lang=\"zh\">In recognition of his contributions to the arts, he was awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star (BBS) by the Hong Kong SAR Government in 2004. He was also named Honorary Fellow of the HKAPA in 2005, Honorary University Fellow of Hong Kong Baptist University in 2007, and received an Honorary Doctorate (Drama) from the HKAPA in 2014. \n\nIn 2008, he founded the organization \u201cAsian Performing Arts Research,\u201d which produced the first government-commissioned study on the state of theatre practice in Hong Kong. The organization also launched various mentorship programs, known as the \u201cDirector-Friend Scheme,\u201d to nurture future theatre professionals.<\/p>\r\n                    <p data-lang=\"zh\">Professor Mao has directed numerous award-winning productions, including:\nWindy Path (\u300a\u98a8\u4e2d\u7d30\u8def\u300b)\nFollowing Sister in Circles (\u300a\u8ddf\u4f4f\u500b\ud844\udcc1\u59b9\u6c39\u6c39\u8f49\u300b)\nHong Kong Sweet and Sour (\u300a\u9178\u9178\u751c\u751c\u9999\u6e2f\u5730\u300b)\nNew Love in a Fallen City (\u300a\u65b0\u50be\u57ce\u4e4b\u6200\u300b)\nIncense of Souls \/ Dream of Pear Blossoms (\u300a\u9084\u9b42\u9999\uff0f\u68a8\u82b1\u5922\u300b)\nPurple Hairpin (\u300a\u60c5\u8a71\u7d2b\u91f5\u300b)\nTao Yuen Complex (\u300a\u675c\u8001\u8a8c\u300b)\nRoad to Damascus (\u300a\u5f80\u5927\u99ac\u58eb\u9769\u4e4b\u8def\u300b)<\/p>\r\n                    <p data-lang=\"zh\">From 2010 to 2019, he served as Convener of the Hong Kong\u2013Taiwan Cultural Cooperation Committee, successfully launching the annual \u201cHong Kong Week\u201d in Taipei to showcase Hong Kong\u2019s creative and cultural achievements.\nBetween 2014 and 2016, he was appointed as the Founding Dean of the School of Chinese Opera at the HKAPA, where he established Hong Kong\u2019s first Bachelor of Arts degree program in Cantonese opera.<\/p>\r\n                    <p data-lang=\"zh\">In 2018, his adaptation and direction of the Cantonese opera Sword of the Floral Pavilion (\u300a\u767e\u82b1\u4ead\u8d08\u528d\u300b) for the Hong Kong Arts Festival received critical acclaim. In 1992, she was honored as one of Hong Kong's Ten Outstanding Young Persons, in 2005 she was selected as one of the first Outstanding Volunteers, and in 2018 she received an Honorary Fellowship from Lingnan University, followed by another Honorary Fellowship from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2021. From the mid-1980s to the late \u201890s, he worked in the financial sector for a series of major international banks.<\/p>\r\n                    <p data-lang=\"zh\">After two decades\u2019 immense hard work, Mr Lau founded Asia One Printing in 1997 and is now recognized as the most respectful high-end offset printer as well as a full spectrum communications operator in Hong Kong. Lau\u2019s expertise in printing industry are fully accredited with his roles as Vice President of Hong Kong Printer Association (HKPA) and Chairman of Institute of Print-Media Professionals(HKIPP).<\/p>\r\n                    <p data-lang=\"zh\">Peter has an eclectic range of interests aside business that has made him an involved stakeholder in different social arenas. His interest  in sailing and maritime tradition has connected him with Hong Kong\u2019s Sea Cadet Corps, of which he served as Deputy Chairman and Council Member.<\/p>\r\n                    <p data-lang=\"zh\">Riding on his enthusiasm of art,\u00a0 Lau has superimposed it on Asia One\u2019s business strategy. In the provision of art space, bookshop and publishing arms, Asia One is dedicated to propelling growth of art groups in local community as well as upgrading its unique branding and market presence.\u00a0\u00a0 Given his active presence and valuable contributions in the local art community, the Government of Hong Kong has appointed Peter as Chairman of Hong Kong Art Centre, member of the Cultural Commission, Member of Advisory Committee on Arts Development (ACAD) of Cultural, Sport and Tourism Bureau, Assessment Panel Member &amp; Initiative Vetting Committee Member of Create Smart Initiative (CSI) of CCIDA and Board Member of Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre(JCCAC). Furthermore, he served two terms on the Antiquities Advisory Board.  In addition to above mentioned roles in servicing the community, Peter is also the Board Member and Past President of Rotary Club of Hong Kong, the mother club of Rotary in Hong Kong.<\/p>\r\n
